On the other hand, these items are lower than pure elements in terms of melting point. This material is added to liquid steel and mixed with it. Steel making generally causes the raw iron to undergo oxidation and eventually turn into steel. This process causes undesirable impurities in iron such as carbon, sulfur and phosphorus to be taken by auxin.

If ferroalloy is used to change the properties of steel, it is called alloying. For example, ferrochrome and ferromanganese with medium or low carbon are related to the alloying process.

These materials, if combined with steel, can change the properties of the final product. Alloy elements become a special material through a series of metal changes. For example, when chromium element is added to molten steel, its structural quality will be better.

When chromium is added, the alpha phase becomes more stable due to a series of cubic-centered crystal lattices. This procedure increases the strength and resistance to rust. In fact, this is the most important reason for the presence of chromium in all stainless steels. When manganese element is added to steel, strength and stability will increase.


Ferroalloys in casting inoculation process

In casting industries, ferroalloys are used to change the characteristics or the conditions of solidification of molten iron. In fact, adding some elements to the molten iron before casting makes it act like a primary crystal nucleus.

In this case, the crystallization center will be simpler. This approach causes the crystal grains to be uniformly dispersed and melted throughout the iron mass. This uniform distribution of grains increases the hardness of the ingots after freezing.

In fact, the amount of fragility also decreases. The addition of inoculating alloys such as silicon and calcium alloys causes the texture of iron to change. In ordinary cast iron, the carbon is dispersed in layers.

In the inoculated iron, in general, dispersion is done uniformly throughout the body. Inoculated iron is very strong in terms of strength and replaces cast steel.

Other applications that can be used for ferroalloy include regeneration. This approach is also used in mechanical industries. On the other hand, it is also used to prepare welding wires


Types of ferroalloys

Ferroalloys come in a variety of styles. In this way, it is good to know each one well:

  1. Ferromanganese: Ferromanganese are an alloy of iron and manganese. 80% of manganese is used in these alloys. Ferromanganese are commonly used to counteract the ill effects of sulfur. This style of ferroalloys is considered for deoxygenation and finally combines with sulfur. Ferromanganese also improve the metallurgical properties. For example, it increases the resistance and increases the hardness of the product. On the other hand, in this model, ferroalloys are used in steel production. This style of ferroalloys is divided into three categories based on carbon percentage: low carbon, medium carbon and high carbon. In general, the high-carbon option is suitable for public use, and medium-carbon or low-carbon models should be used in sensitive sources.


  1. Ferrosilico Manganese: Ferrosilico Manganese is one of the other ferroalloys whose contents are 60-68% manganese and 14-21% silicon. 2.5% of carbon is seen in this composition. This material is produced by melting high-carbon ferro-manganese slag with coke. This style of ferroalloy generally replaces ferrosilicon and ferromanganese and is used for deoxygenation. Adding silico-manganese to steel creates a special composite effect. Ferrosilico manganese with silicon percentage above 30 is used to produce stainless steel. Pay attention that this model of ferroalloys is generally priced depending on the internal composition.


  1. Ferrosilicon: Ferrosilicon is an alloy of iron and silicon. The amount of silica in this product is considered between 10 and 90 percent. This material is generally a type of resistant alloy in steel production. This material is used to adjust the melt properties and also has a cooling process. In general, the final product is added in small amounts.


  1. Ferrochrome: Ferrochrome is also a type of ferroalloy. Its alloy is also evaluated between iron and chromium. In general, 50-70% of it consists of chrome. This material is used to produce stainless steel. In general, carbon steel is also used in this composition. As research shows, this product is an important part of ferroalloy compounds.
  2. Ferrotitanium: Titanium is usually chemically active at high temperature. This substance has a great desire for sulfur, carbon, oxygen and nitrogen. Finally, ferro-titaniums prevent oxidation and are used for desalination. This product is used to improve the quality of steel.
